Hold down the Command and Shift keys and press 3. You will hear a short camera sound. This is the most basic screenshot: it will take pictures of your entire screen at that time.



Look for the screenshot as a png file on the desktop with the name "Screenshot [date/time]."

2. Taking a Screenshot from a Selection



Hold down the Command and Shift keys and press 4. Your cursor will change to a small female bag with the coordinates of the pixels in the lower left.



Click and hold your mouse or trackpad and drag the cursor to select the square area for the screenshot you want. You can press the ESC button to restart without taking a photo.



Release the click to take a picture. Again, your file will be stored on your desktop.

3. Take a screenshot of a window



- Hold down the Command and Shift keys and press four then Space. This will turn your cursor into a small camera icon and whatever window you are hovering over the mouse will be highlighted in blue.

- Highlight the window that you want to take a screenshot. To find the correct window, you can play it through your open application with Command + Tab or use F3 to set all your open windows. Press ESC to cancel the order without taking a photo, Click the highlighted window. Look for your file on the desktop.

4. Save a Screenshot to the Clipboard



Hold down the Control key and do one of the commands above. This will save your screenshot to the clipboard, not as a file stored on the desktop, Attach the screenshot to a word processing document, email or image editor by holding down the Command key and pressing V or selecting "Paste" from the "Edit" menu.


5. Take a screenshot in Preview



Open Preview. Look for Preview in the application folder in the Finder, and double-click the icon, Open the File menu and move your cursor to Take Screen Shot.

Select From Selection, From Window or "From Entire Screen."


  • "From Selection" will change your cursor to a reticle (circle like a telescope display). Click and drag in the rectangular area that you want to capture.

  • "From Window" will turn your cursor into a camera icon. Highlight the window that you want to capture and click.

  • "Entire Screen" will start the countdown. Set the screen you want to capture and wait for the timer to count down.


Save your new picture. The screenshot will immediately open as an unnamed Preview image window. Open the File menu and select "Save." Name the file, select the location and file type, and click "Save."

Tips

If you take a screenshot of your browser window, make sure there are no open tabs that other people don't want to see.
